DECOY DOGS

These dogs were bred to entice waterfowl into a position where the hunters could catch the birds with nets, or shoot them. The dogs acted as decoys by arousing the birds curiosity by scampering along the waters edge, jumping , playing and leaping about as they tried to retrieve a ball or stick from the water. Because the dog did not bark the waterfowl would come closer in order to investigate what was going on. Once the bird had been shot, the dog would then retrieve the bird's body for the hunter.
