RAKKAAT HAUKUT - Helsinki
DOG TRAINERS COURSE 2003

Rakkaat Haukut (which translated means "Beloved Dog"), led by Raili Halme, has developed a series of weekend lectures to enable people to become successful dog trainers using kind positive training methods. These lectures are held once a month over a 6 month period and cover a wide range of topics that help them to fully understand the canine species.

They invited Sally Hopkins to Helsinki to run the first and third weekends of the 2003 course and provided an excellent translator, Ritva Kumpulainen, to assist her.

In August Sally explained to the students how dogs learn by using all their senses - sight, sound, taste, smell and touch - as well as using their instincts, and how different breeds of dogs needed different kinds of motivators to suit their particular drives and instincts.

She returned in October to teach the students how dogs communicate with other dogs and humans (including how they use calming signals), and how stress effects their ability to learn and behave. She also explained how the environment that the dog trained in had a profound effect on its progress.

Sally has been invited back to Helsinki in the Autumn of 2004 to repeat this successful Trainers Course once again.
